Getting There:

Getting to Ray Caye is not just a journey; it’s an adventure in itself, and we found it to be a ton of fun. Your adventure begins with a flight into Belize City, followed by a domestic flight to Placencia. Keep in mind that there are only two airlines, Tropic Air and Maya Island Air, serving this route, and their flight schedules are limited. During our travel, we ended up staying overnight in Belize City because our flight from LAX arrived later than Tropic Air’s departure time. We stayed at a charming resort called River Bend. The next day, Ray Caye Resort arranged for our pickup from Placencia Airport and took us on a scenic one-hour boat ride to our island paradise. It’s essential to coordinate your travel plans with the resort, as there’s typically only one boat to the island per day.

Ray Caye is a playground for adventure seekers and relaxation enthusiasts alike. At the Dive Center, you can book a variety of excursions, including half or full-day fishing trips, one or two-tank scuba diving adventures (we even learned how to Spearfish!), and visits to fantastic snorkeling spots where you can swim alongside nurse sharks, eagle rays, and turtles!

On the island itself, there are plenty of complimentary activities. You can snorkel around the entire island (they provide snorkeling gear for free), paddle around in kayaks or on paddle boards, or even sail around in a Hobie Catamaran! Don’t worry if you’re new to these activities; the Dive Center staff are excellent at teaching you everything you need to know. The island also boasts a volleyball court, a yoga studio, a gym, and two inviting pools.

However, our favorite activity on the island is found at the South Dock. Walk about 100 yards onto the dock, then climb the stairs to the second story. There, you’re faced with two options: take the thrilling water slide or make a daring 15-foot jump into the crystal-clear waters of Belize. The South Dock became a daily highlight of our trip, and everyone, including Trevi, thoroughly enjoyed it!

Cuisine:

Now, in the spirit of transparency, we at The Adventure Buddies may not be culinary experts, but we certainly know good food when we taste it. During our stay at Ray Caye, we were pleasantly surprised by the culinary offerings.

While the resort isn’t all-inclusive (though they do offer a few different all-inclusive packages on their website), the food and drinks here were truly impressive, catering to both kids and parents. There’s only one restaurant on the island, but don’t worry; it’s all you need, and every meal was beyond perfection. You’ll find a consistent breakfast and lunch menu throughout your stay, with enough options to satisfy even the pickiest eaters. The dinner menu changes daily, offering a three-course meal with several choices, including dessert. The Key Lime Pie was a particular standout! What’s more, if you’ve been on a fishing excursion earlier that day and caught some fish, the chef will prepare it for you right on the spot, and let us tell you, it’s some of the best fish we’ve ever tasted!
